On Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at the Knoxville Museum of Art, the Rotary Club of Knoxville will honor the 2024 Peace Award to Marti Baker and the CareCuts of Knoxville.
CareCuts of Knoxville was founded by Marti Baker in April of 2016. CareCuts operates with a mission: to restore dignity to those facing homelessness and adversity through the love of Jesus Christ. The primary service is to provide free haircuts for the homeless and less fortunate every Sunday. CareCuts doesn’t stop at haircuts. CareCuts operates entirely through dedicated volunteers. Their team of volunteer hair professionals, cosmetologists, barbers, and salon owners ensures the less fortunate receive not only a fresh haircut but also a warm meal. They serve food, distribute clothing, and tend to the immediate needs of those they encounter. It’s about more than sustenance; it’s about showing kindness and compassion. It’s about empowering them to regain independence.
CareCuts is the eighth recipient of the Peace Award. The previous winners were Vivian Shipe and I AM the Voice of the Voiceless, Yassin Terou of Yassin’s Falafel, the Beck Cultural Exchange Center, the Community Law Office, Bridge Refugee Services, C.O.N.N.E.C.T. Ministries, and the YWCA of Knoxville and the Tennessee Valley.
